“World Mall” is a proposed massive shopping complex in Dubai. Announced in 2014 by the developer “Dubai Holding,” the project was initially planned for the Al Sufouh area, just a few meters from the current Mall of the Emirates. However, in October 2016, the developer decided to relocate “World Mall” to a site on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
“World Mall” was intended to be a self-contained city featuring shops, restaurants, residences, hotels, and entertainment facilities all under one roof. The project’s key feature is its retractable glass roof, which can be closed during the hot summer months while allowing for outdoor shopping and dining during the winter.
It is expected that “World Mall” will significantly boost tourism in Dubai during the summer months and create a year-round shopping and entertainment destination. “World Mall” is projected to accommodate approximately 180 million visitors annually.
“World Mall” will have a prime location on Sheikh Zayed Road in Al Sufouh 1, opposite the Mall of the Emirates.
“World Mall” will be divided into main neighborhoods, each serving a specific aspect to make this project a city of the future:
The project covers an impressive 8 million square feet and will include the world’s largest temperature-controlled “city.” It will be covered by a dome that can be opened during the winter months and closed for air conditioning during Dubai’s hot summer.
This will be the centerpiece of “World Mall,” covered by a glass dome that will remain open during the winter and closed during the summer.
With nearly 7 km of walkways, the focus is on creating a pedestrian-friendly environment, aiming to allow tourists to stay a week in the summer without leaving “World Mall” or using a car. All retail, entertainment, hospitality, cultural, and recreational options will be connected under one roof.
The project includes 20,000 hotel rooms spread across 100 hotels and serviced apartment buildings. 25 of these hotels will be directly connected to “World Mall,” while the remaining 75 will be accessible via air-conditioned walkways. The hotels will share 50,000 parking spaces on the ground floor.
The theater district will become the home for national and multicultural events, aiming to host international shows and create an atmosphere similar to London’s West End and New York’s Broadway. “Celebration Street,” inspired by Barcelona’s Rambla, will reach the Dubai Cultural District and connect it to the rest of the complex.
This area will be able to accommodate 15,000 people, in addition to a range of wedding and celebration halls and conference centers, including the largest conference hall in the UAE.
Allocated 3 million square feet, the “Wellness District” will focus on medical tourism, catering to people traveling abroad for medical treatments not available in their home countries. It will offer access to healthcare, surgical procedures, cosmetic treatments, and “wellness” services, as well as hospitality services typically needed by patients’ families. Jordan is currently the most popular destination in the Middle East for medical tourism.
The retail component of the mall is expected to cover 8 million square feet and be in a temperature-controlled environment with a retractable roof. The wider street sections are designed to attract retailers wanting to create flagship stores similar to those in some European and Asian cities, which will be a first in the Middle East.
In addition to the existing metro stations “Mall of the Emirates” and “Sharaf DG,” there will be three tram lines leading to “World Mall”: the existing line to “Dubai Marina,” a proposed line to “Jumeirah,” and a third line heading east to “Arabian Ranches.”
